It’s “Wagons Ho!” at Bar 10 Ranch in Littlefield, AZ

Bar 10 Ranch in Littlefield AZBar 10 Ranch is located in Littlefield, AZ, on the North rim of the Grand Canyon. They offer a fair host of western ranch activities, all within view of the magnificent Grand Canyon. And that includes accommodations in covered Conestoga wagons!

Bar 10’s beautifully secluded location near the Grand Canyon provides a variety of activities most others cannot match. 80 miles from civilization, in the heart of some of the most beautiful landscape this country has to offer, makes the ranch a rare and unique destination in today’s modern world.

A Little History

Tony and Ruby Heaton founded the ranch in the early 70s. The remote location made access such a headache that they decided to add an airstrip.

The Bar 10 is located near Lava Falls Rapid, one place folks rafting the Colorado River land. The Heaton’s had a brainstorm that they could offer said rafters an easy flight back to Las Vegas. The idea proved popular and the ranch gained a happy reputation as the first flush toilet and warm shower after a week on the river.

In the early days, the ride out of the canyon was by mule, then by old school bus to the Bar 10 airstrip. The ride out of the canyon is a little faster these days. Instead of mules and a school bus, rafters ride back to the ranch in a helicopter!

Staying at Bar 10 Ranch

Rides out of the canyon aren’t the only thing that has improved with time. While rafters see Bar 10 as a convenient stop-over point, many others know it as a destination all its own.

The ranch offers a wide range of activities. There’s horseback riding, hiking, ATV rides, river rafting, skeet shooting, helicopter tours, and live entertainment, to name but a few. The unparalleled natural beauty of the area is another draw, as is all the amazing foliage and abundant wildlife.

Grand Canyon Wagon Camping

One of our favorite details is the accommodations. While the lodge has five perfectly comfortable rooms you can stay in, they also offer space in two of our Conestoga covered wagons!

Our Conestoga covered wagons are real, handcrafted, wooden wagons. Their design is based on authentic, 19th century wagons but offer enough modern amenities to qualify as luxury accommodations. Bar 10 has named each wagon after a historic wagon trail.

Capitol Reef Resort – Wagon Glamping in South-Central Utah

Conestoga Covered Wagons at Capitol Reef ResortCapitol Reef Resort, in Torrey, Utah, offers one-of-a-kind experience experiences just outside Capitol Reef National Park – including covered wagon glamping!

Capitol Reef National Park, located in south-central Utah, is one of the country’s newest and most popular national parks. It is smack dab in the heart of red rock country and filled with incredible cliffs, canyons, domes, and bridges.

The park’s towering red cliffs provide a breathtaking backdrop for Capitol Reef Resort, which is only 5 miles south, on highway 12, with amenities as spectacular as the views!

Capitol Reef Resort

Some “resorts” leave you questioning if they truly understand the meaning of the word. Not Capitol Reef Resort!

Beyond the stunning National Park in their back yard, Capitol Reef offers multiple outdoor activities. Horseback trail riding, llama day hikes, four-wheeling Jeep safaris, world-class fly-fishing, and more.

Capitol Reef Resort also offers an on-site restaurant, hot tub, swimming pool, and a wide range of accommodations. Options range from comfortable hotel guest rooms, vaulted ceiling cabins, luxury teepees, or a Conestoga covered wagon.

It’s all down to personal taste, of course but the glamping options seem the most tempting and appropriate, given the natural surroundings.

Luxury Wagon Glamping

Conestoga covered wagons are real, handcrafted, wooden wagons based on authentic, 19th century designs. Don’t be fooled, however. What looks like living arrangements straight out of the wild west are, in fact, luxury accommodations with plenty of modern amenities.

Covered Wagon Glamping at Capitol Reef ResortThese covered glamping wagons are insulated and water-resistant, with power, lights, flat screen TVs, and air conditioning. Each wagon sleeps up to 6, with a double pillow top king bed and two sets of twin bunk beds. Private, key-card accessed bathrooms are just a few steps away and you’ll also enjoy the fire pit right outside your wagon.

Best of all, you’ll have expansive, Red Cliff views during the day and absolutely jaw-dropping starscapes at night. The Capitol Reef area is home to some of the clearest, star-filled night skies in the country, with little light pollution. In fact, the International Dark-Sky Association recognized Capitol Reef National Park as a Gold-tier International Dark Sky Park in 2015.

In fact, it would probably take a full week to sample even half of the experiences offered at their Wyoming guest ranch. First, you’ll want to choose your accommodations at the ranch. Goosewing Ranch offers a variety of lodging options including 2-bedroom family cabins and smaller, private cabins.

As you can probably guess, however, we have our eyes on one of their 4 Conestoga glamping wagons

Glamping at Goosewing Ranch

Covered Wagon Glamping at Goosewing RendezvousGoosewing Ranch added Goosewing Rendezvous to the ranch as a separate glamping camp in 2017.

Goosewing Rendezvous is four miles northeast of Goosewing Ranch and located at a greater elevation of 8,400 feet. The remote locale provides numerous opportunities for horseback riding, wildlife spotting, hiking, and fishing. Learn survival skills, Dutch oven cooking, how to care for a horse, and soak up the Gros Ventre beauty.

There’s no cell coverage at Goosewing Rendezvous, and extremely limited internet. Don’t worry, though. You’ll have a dedicated chef, a wrangler/guide, and an event coordinator at your service to make up for it.

And how about those accommodations?

Goosewing Rendezvous Wagon Glamping

Lodging at Goosewing Rendezvous consists of four of our Conestoga pioneer wagons, able to sleep up to 17 guests.

Three of the wagons contain a king bed and three twins set up as bunks to sleep five. The fourth wagon offers a king bed and a seating area to accommodate one couple. Each wagon also has its own, detached bath cabin with a shower, toilet, sink and vanity.

The wagons are equipped with propane lights, lanterns, battery-operated lamps, and solar-powered outlets and USB ports. Heat for the wagons and bath cabins is provided by propane heaters.

This video from the Goosewing Rendezvous site gives an idea of the spaciousness inside a Conestoga Covered Wagon:

A Cabin … Or A Wagon?

You may be wondering what accommodations provide the better experience: a cabin or a wagon? This comment from an August 2018 Goosewing Ranch guest may provide some clarity:

Our family of four spent two nights in a covered wagon and three nights in a cabin at Goosewing. The covered wagon, in particular, was awesome.

As you can see, Conestoga Wagon Co.™ brand handcrafted wagons provide all the best aspects of “roughing it,” along with the expected comfort and convenience of glamping. Take a closer look.
